18世紀のイギリスで、貧しい鍛治職人の家に生まれたアン。信仰心の厚い女性として育った彼女は、4人の子どもを授かるも全員を亡くすという悲痛な体験を経て、自らが「キリストの女性の姿の生まれ変わり」だという啓示を得る。性別や人種の平等を説く彼女の生き方は多くの人々をひきつけるが、その一方で反感や警戒を感じる勢力から迫害を受けるようになる。やがて彼女はわずか8人の信徒とともにアメリカへ渡り、性別・人種の平等信仰をもとにした理想の生活を実現するユートピアを求めるが、その先にも困難が待ち受けていた。
