En principio amable y espontánea pero también profunda comedia dramática sobre una novelista (Meryl Streep), la escritura y un viaje en barco donde se reencuentra con dos viejas amigas. Una película que afortunadamente se ubica lejos de las “comedias geriátricas”.

Con el objeto de recibir un premio en Londres, Alice Hughes, una afamada novelista (Meryl Streep), realiza el viaje desde Nueva York en el crucero Queen Elizabeth II, acompañada por su sobrino Tyler (Lucas Hedges) y dos viejas amigas de la universidad, Roberta y Susan (Candice Bergen y Dianne Wiest, respectivamente). Alice había impuesto a su editora como condición para viajar hacerlo por barco y con acompañantes. La película es básicamente la crónica de ese viaje.
Por varias razones, el director Steven Soderbergh logra una de esas películas en las que empatizamos casi instantáneamente con sus personajes, un film en principio amable donde aparentemente “pasa poco” durante una parte de la misma . No sabemos hacia dónde se dirige la trama y casi no nos importa: disfrutamos viajar con ellos. Y digo aparentemente porque en forma sutil los diálogos van introduciendo detalles del pasado de las protagonistas que cobran relevancia con el reencuentro y se manifiestan en ciertos desencuentros y en un malestar en principio inexplicables. También se expone la ineludible relación entre vida y escritura y entre diferentes maneras de encarar la escritura.
Consignada la naturalidad de los diálogos y situaciones, la empatía con los personajes se logra además por las muy buenas actuaciones de los protagonistas (en particular Streep y una notable Candice Bergen). Esa naturalidad se debe a que los diálogos fueron básicamente improvisados a partir de situaciones planteadas por el guion, durante un rodaje que efectivamente se realizó en el viaje que realiza el crucero de NY a Southampton. El título de la película es también metaficcional: alude a la manera en que fue filmada.
Afortunadamente no estamos ante una de esas comedias geriátricas entre pícaras y sentimentales sino ante una comedia dramática con algo de Woody Allen y algo de Agatha Christie por la presencia de un grupo de personajes obligados a compartir un espacio no habitual y uno o más secretos o misterios que se van revelando. La película logra transmitirnos la sensación de estar embarcados con los protagonistas, con breves y significativos separadores que muestran a verdaderos trabajadores y trabajadoras del barco realizando sus tareas, ajenos al drama burgués que ocurre en primera clase.

In principle friendly and spontaneous but also profound dramatic comedy about a novelist (Meryl Streep), writing and a boat trip where she meets two old friends. A film that fortunately is far from the "geriatric comedies."

In order to receive an award in London, Alice Hughes, a famous novelist (Meryl Streep), makes the trip from New York on the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by her nephew Tyler (Lucas Hedges) and two old friends from college , Roberta and Susan (Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest, respectively). For various reasons, director Steven Soderbergh achieves one of those films in which we almost instantly empathize with his characters, a initially friendly film where apparently "little happens" during a part of it. We don't know where the plot is heading and we hardly care: we enjoy traveling with them. And I say apparently because in a subtle way the dialogues introduce details of the protagonists' past that become relevant with the reunion and are manifested in certain disagreements and in an inexplicable malaise. The inescapable relationship between life and writing and between different ways of approaching writing is also exposed.
Consigned the naturalness of the dialogues and situations, empathy with the characters is also achieved by the very good performances of the protagonists (in particular Streep and a notable Candice Bergen). This naturalness is due to the fact that the dialogues were basically improvised from situations posed by the script, during a filming that actually took place on the trip that the cruise from NY to Southampton made. The title of the film is also metafictional: it alludes to the way it was filmed.
Fortunately we are not facing one of those geriatric comedies between mischievous and sentimental but rather a dramatic comedy with something of Woody Allen and something of Agatha Christie due to the presence of a group of characters forced to share an unusual space and one or more secrets or mysteries that are revealed. The film manages to convey the feeling of being on board with the protagonists, with brief and significant separators that show real workers on the ship performing their tasks, oblivious to the bourgeois drama that takes place in first class.
