(CASTELLANO) Hay películas que arrancan con una premisa sugerente y te mantienen atento durante buena parte del metraje. How It Ends es una de ellas. El planteamiento inicial funciona: algo ha ocurrido, el mundo parece desmoronarse y no tenemos todas las respuestas. Esa incertidumbre es atractiva y durante un rato consigue generar una tensión bastante efectiva.
El problema es que la historia no termina de saber qué hacer con esa buena idea. La película avanza como una especie de viaje constante, con obstáculos que se suceden de forma casi episódica, pero sin que el conflicto principal gane profundidad real. Hay sensación de amenaza, sí, pero también una cierta repetición que va diluyendo el impacto.
Theo James cumple en su papel y Forest Whitaker aporta presencia, aunque el guion no les da demasiado margen para construir personajes memorables. En muchos momentos todo parece estar al servicio de mantener el misterio, más que de desarrollar verdaderamente a quienes lo viven. Eso provoca que la implicación emocional sea limitada.
Visualmente es correcta y tiene algunos tramos logrados en cuanto a atmósfera. El tono posapocalíptico está bien sugerido sin necesidad de grandes despliegues, lo cual es un acierto. Sin embargo, cuando llega el desenlace, la sensación es extraña. No tanto por lo que ocurre, sino por lo que no ocurre. Parece más un punto y seguido que un cierre real.
El final de todo entretiene y tiene una base interesante, pero deja la impresión de que podría haber sido bastante más. La idea es buena, el arranque también, pero el conjunto se queda a medio camino. Y ese final, abierto de una forma que roza lo inacabado, pesa más de lo que debería.
(ENGLISH) Some films begin with a compelling premise and manage to hold your attention for a good portion of their runtime. How It Ends is one of them. The initial setup works: something has happened, the world seems to be collapsing, and we don’t have all the answers. That uncertainty is engaging, and for a while it creates effective tension.
The issue is that the story never quite figures out what to do with that promising idea. The film unfolds as a continuous journey, with obstacles appearing almost episodically, yet without the central conflict gaining real depth. There is a sense of danger, but also a repetition that slowly weakens the impact.
Theo James does what he can in the lead role, and Forest Whitaker brings presence, though the script gives them little room to shape memorable characters. Much of the narrative seems focused on preserving mystery rather than developing the people experiencing it. As a result, emotional involvement remains limited.
Visually, it’s solid and manages to build atmosphere without excessive spectacle, which works in its favor. The post-apocalyptic tone is suggested rather than overstated. However, when the ending arrives, the feeling is peculiar. Not so much because of what happens, but because of what doesn’t. It feels more like a pause than a conclusion.
How It Ends is entertaining and built on an interesting foundation, but it leaves the impression that it could have been much stronger. The concept is good, the beginning is solid, yet the whole feels unfinished. And that ending, open in a way that borders on incomplete, weighs more than it should.
